Home Care: What Is It And Is It Covered?

Posted on: 29 June 2022

Home care is a resource that people of all ages are beginning to take advantage of. It's a great way to receive many different types of care and services but in the comfort of your own home. No more long drives to the clinic! Home care cuts out the hassle.

What Is Home Care?

Home care services consist of a wide range of offered services that can be performed in the home. This allows caregivers, nurses, or therapists to come into your home to give you the care you need. Home care can be provided through a clinic, an independent nurse, or a home care agency. If you're not sure where to start to find information in your area, ask your doctor.

What Home Care Services are Offered?

The specific services offered will depend on who/where you are receiving your home care services from.

However, common service options can include:

  • Cleaning
  • Grocery shopping
  • Cooking
  • Bathing/shower assistance
  • Wound care
  • Medication management
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Transportation
  • Catheter care

There are many more possible service options. Your doctor can help you find a home care service provider able to provide you with the care you're looking for.

What Is a Home Care Agency?

A home care agency is a company that specializes in providing home care to those in need. Depending on the services they offer, they would have their own caregivers, nurses, and therapists on staff. Home care agencies are convenient to work with because they have certain people that handle the insurance and billing side of things for you. If you're not sure if your insurance would cover the services you're looking for, the home care agency would get that information for you.

With home care agencies, you also do not have to worry about finding the right people to come to assist you in your home. Most agencies will require a background check before allowing a caregiver to enter a client's home. As the client, you would also have the freedom to ask for a different caregiver on their staff if you're not comfortable with the one assigned to you. Some agencies will let you bring your own caregiver, and, pending a background check, will hire them with their agency.

Does Insurance Cover Home Care?

Most insurances these days will cover some or all of the cost of home care. Always check your specific insurance plan before beginning services just to be safe. If for some reason your insurance does not cover home care services, you always have the option to pay for services out of pocket.
